Doctors worldwide agree that sitting for prolonged periods of time can have detrimental effects on a person’s health, particularly with the spine, pain, obesity, shortened lifespan, and causing metabolic syndrome. Although many employers are reluctant to consider chairs the cause of such things, the scientific evidence compiled is overwhelming. US employers pay almost $1 billion per week for direct workers compensation costs according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), a statistic that can be greatly reduced if employers choose to incorporate ergonomic options in their workplace. In fact, by making the switch to ergonomic there are proven lower absentee rates and an employer’s workers’ compensation costs may be cut by 60-90%. In fact, many countries outside the United States have taken greater measures to bring ergonomic technology in the work place and reap the benefits, such as Denmark which has legally required the option of standing workstations for their employees. Although ergonomic solutions are not legally required in the United States (yet), by simply adding ergonomic chairs is a simple and easy way to better health, happiness, and increase productivity.
